Beginner's Bathroom Makeover: Learn to Plan & Design with Ease - New!

This beginner friendly workshop is designed for anyone looking to renovate their bathroom with confidence. Whether you’re planning your own bathroom makeover or simply interested in interior design, this hands-on session will teach you how to design a functional, stylish, and accessible space.

Bathrooms are one of the most used areas in the home, but they can also present challenges for people with mobility issues. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to draw a basic scale floor plan and choose suitable materials and fixtures to improve both safety and aesthetics. Using a real-world design brief, you’ll take on the role of a designer and plan a bathroom renovation for a client with mobility needs.

By the end of this session, you will have the skills to analyse space, select the right materials, and make thoughtful design choices.

Course Outline:

Introduction to Bathroom Design:

  • Understanding functional bathroom layouts
  • Basics of scale drawing for floor plans
  • Identifying key design challenges for mobility needs

Hands-on Sketching & Planning:

  • Drawing a scale floor plan of a bathroom
  • Learning how to space plan for accessibility
  • Exploring different shower, toilet, and storage placements

Choosing Materials & Fixtures:

  • Non-slip tiles & flooring options
  • Best shower designs for easy access
  • Selecting ergonomic fixtures and grab bars
  • Lighting considerations for better visibility

Final Design Presentation:

  • Refining your floor plan and design choices
  • Sharing and discussing design solutions

Learning Outcome:

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • Understand how to design a functional bathroom for accessibility
  • Learn to draw a basic scale floor plan
  • Be able to choose suitable materials for safety and ease of use
  • Know how to plan space for mobility aids and grab bars

What to bring:

  • A3 drawing paper ( please bring a pad and spare paper )
  • Mechanical pencil or Pencils H or HB, erasers, sharpener
  • Fine liner pen and sharpie marker
  • Glue and scissors
  • Design magazine, images from online or any bathroom images, ideas or inspirations
  • Scale ruler must include scale 1: 20 / 1:50 ( from Eckersley or office works )
  • Colouring pencil for shading
  • Tracing paper or non-waxed baking paper ( for sketching )
  • Measuring tape 3 metre length at minimum ( Bunnings, Mitre 10 )

About the Tutor:

'With over seven years of experience as an educator and interior designer, I focus on creating enjoyable and approachable learning experiences in design and creative fields. I’ve had the privilege of teaching at institutions like Open Colleges Australia, Whitehouse Institute of Design, and Raffles College of Design, where I’ve helped students build confidence in their design skills.

My background in interior design has given me valuable insights into home renovation and creating functional, welcoming spaces. I love sharing simple and practical design techniques to help people plan spaces that meet their needs while reflecting their personal style. In this workshop, I aim to guide you through the essentials of bathroom design in a fun and relaxed setting.   • To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
  • All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled prior to the commencement and you will be informed.
