Learn Italian for Travellers
Famous for its art, music, fashion and iconic food, Italy is a top tourist destination in its own right, and that’s without even considering the Colosseum, the canals of Venice, the Pantheon just to name a few. If you are planning or intending to travel to Italy, this course covers Italy’s culture, lifestyle and basic Italian grammar, and serves as a useful introduction to the language.
SGSCC Travellers courses aim to give you the confidence to deal with everyday situations during your travel, e.g. booking accommodation, ordering meals, asking for directions or assistance and conversational skills for shopping.
The nature of this course requires a high level of participation by the students who will be invited to take part in role-playing activities. The tutor will provide a suitable workbook with information, written exercises and activities for role-playing. Grammatical notes are included.
This course is offered in Terms 2 & 4.
Course Outline:
- Italian alphabet, greetings, introductions.
- Talk about yourself and ask the same of others.
- Numbers, pronunciation, some basic grammar.
- Use of verb to be, shopping for clothes, asking prices.
- Use of verb to have, ordering at the cafe' and restaurant.
- Booking accommodation, saying date and time.
- Asking directions. Understanding timetables.
- Basic conversation. Buying tickets. Learn the name of the parts of the body.
- Describe people’s appearance. Visiting the pharmacy.
Course Outcomes:
- Greeting people and introduce yourself, family and friends.
- Talk about yourself and enquire about others.
- Ask for items describing colours , sizes and asking prices.
- Ordering at the cafe', book a table at the restaurant, understand the menu and order a meal.
- Buying tickets, book accommodation, say time and date.
- Asking and understanding directions and timetables.
- Basic conversation about weather, family and yourself.
- Describe people, name the parts of the body. Ask for advise at the Chemist’s.

About the tutor:
Arsenia Neirotti was born in Torino (Italy) where she also completed her studies.
She has a great passion for the Italian language which she enjoys sharing with her students. Her love for her language prompted her to specialise in Adult Education and has been teaching at the SGSCC for over 30 years.
Her main interests are Italian Renaissance Art and Opera which she has enthusiastically presented in her Italian Culture workshops.
Arsenia firmly believes that learning should be fun at any age so join her and have a great time!

- To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
- All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
